Researchers
clone monkey by splitting embryo
Oregon
researchers say they have cloned a monkey by splitting an early-stage embryo
and implanting the pieces into mother animals.
The technique, detailed in Friday's issue of the journal Science, has so far
produced only one living monkey, a bright-eyed rhesus macaque female named
Tetra, now 4 months old.
Professor Gerald Schatten, a researcher at the Oregon Health Sciences
University in Portland who led the research, said four more animals are on
the way.

Indian
Airlines hijackers said to have fled
After freeing 155

militants from Indian prisons, the five hijackers and the freed rebels sped
off from Kandahar airport in four-wheel-drive vehicles, taking a Taliban
official with them as a hostage.
Given a 10-hour deadline to leave the country, the hijackers of an Indian
Airlines jet fled to the southern Afghanistan desert Friday and crossed into a
neighboring nation, Afghanistan's ruling Taliban said Saturday.

Much
fun, few bugs so far in Y2K
As the
sun rose Saturday on a brand new year, some were sleeping off millennium-sized
hangovers, some were sweeping up millennium-sized piles of confetti, and
others were just relieved that millennium-sized fears of Y2K disasters proved
largely unfounded. But it was quite a celebration, a 25-hour romp around the
globe from one South Pacific island around the world and back again. The
much-dreaded Y2K computer glitches were minimal, with few people, if any,
affected, officials reported.
